Posted 15 January 2006, 6:55 pm NST
In September 2000 with the kind assistance of David Nui of Utshimassits, (then head of the Mushuauinnu Council of Utshimassits)a gathering of senior Mushuauinnu people was held at Kamestastin. In attendance were: Tshenish, Etuet and Akat Piwas, Nian and Anashe Rich, Uniam and Piname Katshinak, Etuet and Manteskueu Mistanapeu, Utshimaskueu, Munik Rich, MistaShashin, Shuashim and Petastipineu Nui, and Matninish.

David Nui organized and led a caribou hunt which provided plentiful meat to those at the tent camp.

Organizational support was provided by Etienne Pastiwet, Stephen Loring and Anthony Jenkinson. Ben Rich provided extra help to the old people in cutting and splitting firewood, fetching water etc.

In the second week of the gathering we were joined by Peter Voll of Peter Voll Travel in Palo Alto, California, Susan Connell of SECA Travel, Stonington, Connecticut and Lynne Fitzhugh from Washington, D.C.

The gathering was the setting for important discussions over the need for Innu cultural continuity and the means by which this might best be assured. The old Mushuauinnu figures in attendance spoke forcefully on the role of cultural disruption in promoting the social ills in the new government sponsored villages, and on the need for young Innu to be properly educated in the Innu world.
